About Newborn Mammals
Most animals (except marsupials & monotremes) are classified as Eutherian mammals. This means that young develop in the uterus and nourished via the placenta prior to birth. As a result, the young are born relatively well-developed compared to marsupials. After birth, newborn mammals are fed colostrum, to develop the immune system. The duration of colostrum absorption is variable, but only lasts for about 48 hours for most species.
